About Tobias Birch Ltd

Montpellier Clocks was founded in 1958 and specialises in 17th- to 19th-century English clocks, which can be viewed in their current showrooms in Cheltenham where they have been for over 25 years.

Their stock has included clocks by great makers such as Edward Dent, Edward East, John Ellicott, William Dutton, Charles Frodsham, George Graham, Thomas Tompion, Vulliamy, Thomas Mudge and Joseph Windmills, as well as fine and interesting clocks by lesser-known makers.

The business was first established by George Curtis and later run by Burton Bass who subsequently passed it to his grandson, Tobias Birch, who has spent his entire career working with clocks. In 1990, at the age of nineteen he was the youngest student ever to have been awarded a Distinction in the Conservation and Restoration of Antique Clocks from the world-renowned West Dean College. Shortly after he graduated the collector Samuel Messer asked Tobias to care for his clocks. These included the famous Barnard Tompion along with five others by Thomas Tompion. Tobias has had the privilege of restoring some of the world’s finest clocks and is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. His passion and enthusiasm for clocks is infectious and he still undertakes important restoration jobs himself.

In addition to their own stock and restoration services, Montpellier Clocks offers their expertise on a consultancy basis and will act as an agent for a private collector, interior designer, museum or institution. They are able to advise on every aspect of sourcing, buying, selling and maintaining fine antique clocks.
